Local news reports indicate that Dieune Day, a Haitian pastor wanted by the Haitian National Police on charges of smuggling arms into the county, was arrested in December in the nearby Dominican Republic. Day allegedly was turned over to Haitian officials.
Day, a reported ringleader in the smuggling of guns, cash, and military supplies into the country via shipments from the Episcopal Church, was the subject of an arrest warrant alleging tax evasion, smuggling, breach of trust, criminal conspiracy, and other charges.
Day’s arrest was one of several after Haitian customs officials inspected duty-free shipments in 2022, from the Episcopal Church, only to discover arms, US currency, ammunition, and other contraband.
The conspiracy appears to have been wide-ranging, with the US being the largest exporter of high-powered arms to the country.
Additionally, Anglican Watch has traced vehicles, weapons, and other items used by Haitian rebels to various persons across the United States, including an individual in West Virginia.
Anglican Watch has been unable to obtain additional information about Day’s arrest.
The Episcopal Church has done little to address issues in Haiti beyond contacting the president of the Haitian standing committee, then a fugitive, to request the election of a new bishop diocesan.
