The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia has failed to adopt updated abuse prevention policies as required by resolutions passed at General Convention 79. These policies include policies for vulnerable adults, which were to be adopted by January 1, 2019. These standards were to required to meet or exceed those adopted by the national church, and included triennial compliance audits and adoption of parish-level safe church policies.
The news follows the diocese’s decision to cease funding for misconduct prevention training, saying it plans to exclusively use online resources from the national church.
The diocese also has refused to adopt policies to prevent bullying within churches.
A diocesan spokesperson declined to comment.
