Opinion: Dr. Phil Ryken’s portrait must go

Phil Ryken

Dr. Phil Ryken’s portrait needs to be removed from Tenth Presbyterian. Here’s why:

  1. Dr. Ryken’s sordid legacy at Tenth: While Youth Minister Carroll Wynne was patting young women’s bottoms (a criminal offense against underage girls), Director of Music Paul S. Jones was beating young men’s bare buttocks to a bloody pulp.”
  2. For years, Dr. Ryken covered up the abuses that Paul Jones inflicted on the young men. These men were greatly harmed. One of the victims is now living in a mental institution.
  3. As Senior Minister, Dr. Ryken was ultimately responsible for the safety and welfare of our children at Tenth. He failed miserably in this most important responsibility.

He was woefully derelict in his responsibilities. Under Ryken’s watch, Maranatha youth minister Carroll Wynne exposed young men and women to pornography.

Pastor Wynne also inappropriately patted young women’s bottoms – both activities are misdemeanor crimes committed within the four walls of the Tenth campus.

There is also speculation that Dr. Ryken was aware of these abuses occurring at the Maranatha youth group but did nothing about it.

4. Given the above, I believe that Dr. Ryken has proven himself to be a man of poor character.

If the portrait were to remain, It would be a cruel, callous affront to the young men and women who have been grievously harmed at Tenth Presbyterian Church – physically, emotionally, spiritually.

His portrait must go!
