Retired Episcopal priest Stephen Williams Foote, canonically resident in the Diocese of Maine, was sentenced in 2012 to 45 days in prison, community service, and one year probation after entering a plea agreement in which he admitted to sending drugs to a prisoner. Also charged in the case were Joshua Theriault Patten, 25, of Bremen, who was one of Foote’s parishioners, and Adam Shawley, 27, of Newport.
Foote was arrested in November 2012 and charged with smuggling the drug Suboxone into Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset during October, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department Detective Michael Murphy said at the time.
Foote was immediately placed on administrative suspension by the diocese and charged until Title IV, the church disciplinary canon.
As of 2022, Foote’s name remains in the Episcopal clergy finder, suggesting he has not been defrocked.
