Episcopal Academy third grade teacher Richard Perkins Smith was arrested in 2013 for sexual abuse of four boys aged 11 to 14 at a Massachusetts summer camp and of one fourth grade student at Episcopal Academy near Philadelphia. Smith was a 1966 graduate of Episcopal Academy, where he taught from 1970 to 1990. Smith admitted to Pennsylvania State Police that he molested a fourth-grade student at Episcopal in 1977 and confessed to the head of school about the matter, but remained on teaching staff for 13 more years. He retired from the Episcopal Academy development office in 1998. Smith was also arraigned in Massachusetts for charges related to abuse of children at the Camp Good News on Cape Cod in 1981. Smith admitted during his 2013 interviews with Massachusetts and Pennsylvania police that he financed his partner’s child pornography website. He was subsequently also charged with child pornography offenses. Smith was sentenced in December 2015 to two years in prison, three years of probation, and lifetime sex offender registry compliance.
