On Friday, October 14, 2022, former Diocese of London treasurer Martin Sargeant pleaded guilty to theft of £5.2 million ($6.3 million) from the Two Cities Churches Trust. A charity, the organization was founded in 1891 to support the restoration of churches in the City of London.
The theft covered a ten-year period, involving Sargeant requesting checks for impoverished churches, which he then converted to his own use.
In admitting guilt, Sargeant stated he had a longstanding gambling addiction.
