Spotlight on abuse: Episcopal priest Antoine Lamont Campbell

Antoine Lamont Campbell

Antoine Lamont Campbell was elected in 1993 as Bishop Suffragan in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Prior to his consecration, allegations of sexual misconduct with an adult woman emerged. Subsequently Campbell withdrew from the consecration process.

Had Campbell been consecrated, he would have been the first African-American bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Additionally, at 38, he would have been the youngest member of the House of Bishops.

The ensuing disciplinary investigation was inconclusive, and Campbell went on to serve a parish in Texas.

As of 2022, his name does not appear in the Church Pension Group’s online directory of Episcopal clergy.
