Spotlight on abuse: Episcopal priest Nicholas Szobota, embezzler

Nicholas S. Szobota

In early 2024, Episcopal priest Nicholas Szobota, rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Colonial Beach, Virginia, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of embezzlement, one misdemeanor account of embezzlement, and two felony counts of using a computer to commit embezzlement. Victims include St. Mary’s and the Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Under terms of a plea agreement, Szobota is serving a limited prison sentence and confined only on weekends. Additionally, he must undergo psychological testing, make restitution, and avoid contact with his victims. In exchange, state officials reduced one of the three original felony embezzlement charges to a misdemeanor.

If Szobota completes the terms of his plea, the remaining felony charges will be reduced to misdemeanors.

State officials report that Szobota used some of the funds for porn accounts. As a result, the defendant will undergo psychosexual screening.
