The priest in your pocket: Pauli Murray to be featured on US quarters

Pauli Murray

It’s a bit outside our usual bailiwick of all abuse, all the time. But it’s too good to pass up.

On February 1, the US Mint announced that, beginning in 2024, quarters will feature a portrait of the first black female priest in the Episcopal Church, Pauli Murray.

A leader in the Civil Rights movement, Murray was a writer, attorney, and founder of the National Organization of Women.

Murray also refused, almost 15 years before Rosa Parks, to move to the back of a segregated bus, but the move got relatively little attention. She was also an early advocate against separate but equal, culminating in the Brown v. Board of Education decision.

Largely overlooked until recently, Murray’s feast day is July 1. She also is believed to have been queer.
